Sonas Denim Review - Vintage Meets Modern Chic

Gerry Kelly might be new to the LA scene, but the Irish designer has been working in the fashion world for years. His creativity is what swept him thousands of miles away from his hometown in Dublin, so he could create new experiences and gain inspiration from all parts of the globe.

This story began in 2001 on San Francisco’s renowned Haight Street, known for its vintage fashion and hippie culture. The old-fashioned boutiques and retro flavor permeated the neighborhood, and Kelly was among the flock checking out the scene. It was here he stumbled upon a vintage shop where a unique pair of patchwork jeans caught his eye. He snatched up the jeans, and the two soon became a “pair,” attending parties and yearly Burning Man events together.

After nearly a decade, and nine Burning Man festivals, Kelly’s vintage jeans finally wore out. He decided it was time for a quick trip back to Haight Street, but much to Kelly’s dismay the shops he once frequented were no longer there.

An unsuccessful attempt of finding patchwork jeans may have left most people empty-handed, but instead fueled Kelly’s inspiration to create a patchwork collection of his own! He spent weeks collecting patches of colored denim, laying them all over his living room floor and piecing them together, one by one. He proudly wore those jeans all over town, and they soon attracted the attention of all the locals.

Christine Garcia, Kelly’s wife, joined in on the fun too, and together they made 100 new pairs of patchwork jeans and took them on the road to Los Angeles for a trade show. Sonas Denim was born – the compassionate, eco-friendly lifestyle brand for men and women.

Sonas is the Irish word for happiness,” states Kelly. “Happiness not limited to human beings, but for our animal friends as well!  That’s why Sonas Denim will never use animal products of any kind in our designs.”

Kelly, Garcia, and their rescue cat, made that trip to Los Angeles a permanent one. Garcia moved her Animal Law practice to LA, and Kelly refined his patchwork collection and expanded his line to integrate both their passions: cruelty-free, fashion-forward patchwork designs where a percentage of all sales benefits animals in need.

Consumers can feel good wearing something from the Sonas Denim collection. Each pair of jeans tells a story, and each pair has made a difference in the life of a homeless animal.
