'Small Town Crime' SXSW 2017 Preview - Saban Films and DirecTV Bought the North American Rights

The film ‘Small Town Crime’ 2017 had its world premiere at SXSW 2017 at the majestic Paramount Theatre. ‘Small Town Crime,’ was financed and developed by Avva Pictures and written and directed by Eshom and Ian Nelms ("Waffle Street", "Night of the Dog"," Lost on Purpose"). The film's executive producer was Octavia Spencer who was also part of the cast.  After the world premiere, Saban Films and DirecTV bought the North American rights to John Hawkes’ drama. Saban Films has not set a release date for the film.

The film has an astounding cast the Academy Award Nominee John Hawkes ("Winter's Bone", "American Gangster", "The Sessions"), Golden Globe Nominee Anthony Anderson ("Black-ish", "The Departed"), Academy Award Nominee Robert Forster (Jackie Brown, The Descendants), and Academy Award Winner Octavia Spencer. The film also stars Clifton Collins, Jr., Michael Vartan ("The Arrangement", "Bates Motel"), James Lafferty ("One Tree Hill"), Michelle Lang, Daniel Sunjata, Caity Lotz, Jeremy Ratchford, Don Harvey, Stefanie Scott, and Dale Dickey.

“Ex-cop Mike Kendall played by John Hawkes is an alcoholic and he was throw out of the force after he inadvertently caused the deaths of his partner and an innocent bystander while policing under the influence. He discovers the body of a young woman and, in an act of self-redemption, becomes hellbent on finding her killer. While his uncouth and quirky detective style helps break open the case, his dogged determination unwittingly puts his sister (Octavia Spencer) and best friend (Anthony Anderson) in danger.”

The film offers great entertainment story about a crime story and also puts the audience in a great mood with its sense of humor.

During SXSW Yenis Monterrey from  LA Splash Magazine talked briefly on the Red Carpet with some members of the cast:

Yenis Monterrey.- Who is Tony Lama your character, and what’s your point of view of the film as an actor?

James Lafferty.- I play a character called Tony Lama, and he is a troublemaker. As an actor, I feel this character offered me the opportunity to get out of my comfort zone and play someone I haven’t played before. I appreciate this film where you can still sit down and watch a movie just to have fun and basically for entertainment.

Yenis Monterrey.- Michael, is this your first time in SXSW? Who are you in the film? What does this film mean to you?

Michael Vartan.- This is my first time in SXSW and in Austin, TX. I play as a  detective. Most of my scenes are with John Hawkes who he is a cop who was thrown out the force because of his drinking problems and other things, and I’m the only character in the movies who really believes in him and gives him one more chance to redeem himself.

Sometimes as an actor you get the job for three reasons.  The first one is because you want to work with an incredible group of actors and crew, the second is that sometimes you take the job because you love the script, and the third one is that sometimes you take the job because you need to pay your rent. In my case, I loved the script and I loved the opportunity to work with a great group of actors and director. I’m so grateful for being part of the creative process where dreams come true. I still can’t believe the great opportunity of working on this film.

Yenis Monterrey.- Michelle, the film looks like a very exciting film and a great cast. Who are you in ‘Small Town Crime and how did you build your character?

Michelle Lang, The film is about an alcoholic ex-cop Mike who finds the body of a young girl, and he tries to figure out who killed her. He is a little quirky and uncouth.  I play Mike's on and off girlfriend where he has a shoulder to cry and a bed to sleep in. I have to build my character and I worked on my scenes. My character was fun to play and especially with John Hawkes, and we were trying to figure out how these two are compatible and how they work together.
