Those who love literature and enjoy history will probably like A Quiet Passion, a biography of American poet Emily Dickenson.  Written and directed by Terence Davies and distributed by Music Box Films

Born in Amherst, Massachusetts, Emily Dickenson showed her rebellious nature early on.  "Docility is much like slavery," she sharply retorted when her aunt asked about her religious feelings.  Yet following the manners and mores of the time she found it necessary to ask her father's permission to write her poetry at night and permission to publish.    Though because women of that time were discouraged from using their creativity, only a few of her poems were published during her lifetime.  Even those were somewhat altered by the publisher who felt he knew better than a mere woman.

Many of her poems, which are read throughout the film, center around death and dying.   Since women were mainly judged then by their outward beauty and feeling that she did not meet the standards of the day, Emily became more and more reclusive as she grew older and seldom left her room.   Since she was not publicly recognized during her lifetime, her first volume of poetry was not published until after her dead when her sister found them in 1890.  All together Emily had written 40 hardbound volumes with almost 1,800 poems.

The superb acting almost outweighed the stilted dialogue (which tried to be true to the time period) and the length of the film.   Again those who like literature and history will appreciate many things about the movie.
